The Board of Governance body is charged with continuing the original vision for
Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary that began in 2018.
Now, Bethune Elementary Charter School serves 700+ students in grades PreK through 8th grade. School leaders ensure students are prepared as leaders of tomorrow.

Significant Educators d.b.a. "Bethune" will include on its charter board at least one a member who is a parent, guardian, or grandparent of a student or recent student, and/or a former student.

The board considers nominations on a rolling basis and encourages nomination at any time of the year. If you are a Bethune parent, guardian, grandparent, and/or alumni and would like to be considered for a board appointment, please see below for the process and timeline for selection:

Once you submit the nomination, a member of the Governance Committee will contact you to set up a meeting so you can become familiar with the board’s responsibilities and meet members of the board.

Nominations are considered at open meetings of the Governance Committee, which presents its nominations to the entire board at an open meeting.

All applicants will be contacted on the status of the nomination.

If an applicant is selected to join the board, they will be given the next steps on the board member orientation process.

of the Significant Educators Governing Board
Significant Educators as the operators of Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary Charter School is committed to providing a Governing board of individuals possessing a diverse set of professional skills and practical work experience in areas of education, public/non-profit administration, operations, community development, finance, and law.
The Significant Educators governing board shall consist of no fewer than seven (7) members.
Additionally, at least sixty percent (60%) of the members of the Governing board shall have legal domicile in Orleans Parish. In compliance with Orleans Parish School Board Policy HA, the Governing Board membership shall include at least one parent, legal guardian, or grandparent of one or more students currently enrolled at Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary Charter School. The parent or legal guardian requirement may be satisfied by a recent graduate (within the past 5 years).
Significant Educators shall ensure full compliance with this paragraph and shall make new Board appointments within 60 days if for any reason the Board membership deviates from this formula based on some unforeseen circumstance.
No governing board member may be employed by the school, in any manner, in accordance with La. Rev. Stat. Ann. §17:3991. No governing board member may be employed by the Orleans Parish School Board, in any administrative capacity.
No governing board member shall receive any compensation, other than optional reimbursement of actual expenses incurred while fulfilling duties as a member of the board, in accordance with La. Rev. Stat. Ann. §17:3991, nor shall they solicit or accept personal gifts from any person or entity doing business, or seeking to do business, with the governing board or charter school, in accordance with La. Rev. Stat. Ann §42:1115.
